Nobel prize in physics
In the 1960s Professor Charles Kao left Hong Kong for Britain to find the resources he needed to study and conduct research. At Imperial College London, where he earned his PhD, he presented a ground-breaking paper on fibre optics carrying information. Kao's invention of fibre optic cables led to the information superhighway. He has just been awarded the Nobel Prize.
Willard Boyle and George Smith, both of the United States, share half the prize for unrelated work that led to the first digital camera.
