PD James rattles Beeb Director
You may have seen or heard this story. PD James was guest editor of BBC Radio 4's Today programme for the day, and interviewed DG Mark Thompson.
PD James was a governor of the BBC until the early 1990s; she was born three years before the foundation of the BBC in 1923. Like many of us she loves old Auntie, but wonders how and why it has so badly lost its way.
The interview begins with the author's beautiful, extended comparision of the BBC to a large, unwieldy ship lacking direction. While the DG nervously swallows James then aims at the 37 BBC managers earning more than the Prime Minister.
