POW, rugby player, pioneering heart disease researcher
Professor Sam Perry, who died on December 17 aged 91, was a pioneering researcher in the field of muscle biochemistry, identifying the gold standard for diagnosing heart attacks; during the war he escaped from the Germans three times and after the conflict played rugby for England, winning seven caps.
He carried The Annual Review of Biochemistry of 1942 (volume 11) with him on all his escapes.
After the Second World War, Sam Perry returned to Britain, conducted biochemical research and taught. His "extensive work on the proteins found in skeletal and cardiac muscle has been seminal, and has directly informed the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease in modern medicine".
