Birthday at the British Museum

The British Museum opened to the public on January 15th 1759. It was first housed in a seventeenth-century mansion, Montagu House, Bloomsbury, on the site of today's building. Its "papa" was Sir Hans Sloane. Its "mama" was Parliament.

Unless I'm mistaken, that small boy is going to drag his parents toward the giraffes. Entry to the Museum was free to ‘all studious and curious Persons’.
We have more about the Museum, including international controversies, here.
