Quasars viewed from Edinburgh
Saturday we quoted Alexander McCall Smith on Edinburgh. While his heroine Isabel was wandering the streets, astronomer Mike Hawkins from the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh was looking at quasars - 900 quasars over 28 years. Hawkins has recently come to the sensational conclusion that time dilation may hold true everywhere in the universe but it does not hold true for quasars. Will this change everything scientists thought they knew about the universe?
Between the 1950s and 1970s, Martin Ryle led the Cambridge radio astronomy group. Their observations led to the discovery of the first quasar.
