Edwardian childhood
Etheldreda Laing's autochrome photograph of her two daughters in the garden at Bury Knowle in 1908 appeared in the Telegraph with a letter from Elizabeth Bradley of Tewkesbury.
Elizabeth muses that we are used to seeing Edwardian people in black&white; photographs, so it comes as a surprise to see them in colour.
I used to play the whole summer in tennis shoes like those the younger daughter is wearing. Musing on my childhood, which begins to seem as far away in time as that little girl, I wonder, could childhood be both past, present and eternal?
