Pickles hopefully not in a pickle as he tackles extravagant local councils
Eric Pickles, the Secretary of State for Local Government, will need all his wit and courage as he tries to end local council waste and self-serving bureaucrats in local fiefdoms.
One huge problem, mentioned but not explored in the Telegraph article, is that the money funding the councils comes down to them from the national government. The remoteness of the funding means that local citizens are not involved. Local councils should be forced to be accountable by obtaining most of their budget money from local people, who will become very interested in how it is spent.
