Royal Wootton Bassett
For four years the people of Wootton Bassett honoured British servicemen killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, never failing to pay their respects to the repatriated dead, conveyed in hearses along their high street with painful regularity.
The first town to be honoured by Royal in more than a century, Wootton Bassett began and ended their work in silence. This was a day to remember again the service rendered by members of the Armed Forces.
What Wootton Bassett did, it did on its own resolve, and carried through with unshakeable determination.
The Queen and the Princess Royal paid tribute to them.
