EU and British folly
You know almost everything you need to know about the EU when a pledge to hold a democratic referendum (in Greece) intensifies the EU's economic crisis. Nile Gardiner writes:
The huge difficulties facing the Euro are symbolic of the deep-seated problems enveloping the European Union today. Chief among them is a lack of economic freedom -- thanks to over-regulation of businesses, high tax rates and massive welfare spending as well as heavily protectionist measures (such as the Common Agricultural Policy) that limit free trade outside the EU.
And the British people continue to suffer from our association with the EU in the form of higher VAT, higher prices for everything we buy, the destruction of our fisheries, business regulations that stifle business and the creation of jobs, and the corruption of constitutional government. . .Why do we put up with it?
