A new biography of artist Edward Burne-Jones
Elusive as a cloud, Pre-Raphaelite Edward Burne-Jones is the subject of a new biography by Fiona MacCarthy. The author of a biography of William Morris, MacCarthy pursues the otherworldly Burne-Jones, who collaborated with Morris on tapestries and stained glass and created strangely beautiful paintings.
'I mean by a picture," Edward Burne-Jones wrote, "a beautiful romantic dream of something that never was, never will be—in a light better than any light that ever shone—in a land no one can define or remember, only desire.'
He is reticent about his paintings' vivid psychological explorations.
