Britain's love affair with the horse

"The British have a unique relationship with horses. They are etched into our landscape in chalk, they have been written about, painted, sung about, celebrated and gambled upon for centuries."
Britain's people live closely and happily with horses, who are, by and large, kind to us, even when it must be obvious that they are our superiors.
Naturally, England's patron saint rides a horse, and The Queen loves horses. She understands how a man may love a horse.
I learned from a young man's father that one day, when his son was a teenager, he met the horse of his brother's girlfriend. Though he had never been around horses before, he decided that his life's work would be with horses. Eventually he was invited to work for The Queen, at a racing stable.
"Is there anything you'll miss?" he was asked. "Foaling," he said.
So every year he is sent for a week to Sandringham, to be near when the foals are born.
