Adam Lindsay Gordon's encouraging words
A friend gave us this poem, which, after a particularly trying year, HM Queen Elizabeth quoted -
Question not, but live and labour
Till yon goal be won
Helping every feeble neighbour
Seeking help from none;
Life is mostly froth and bubble
Two things stand like stone
Kindness in another's trouble
Courage in your own.
Gordon was English by birth, but after a disheveled life here, grew up in Australia where he rode horses and wrote poetry. Australia considers Gordon her own.
He could not pay for his last book of poems, and so did what he thought was the courageous thing to do. Quite sad.
His best poems have helped many others to carry on.
