This grotesque carnage, which murdered twelve of Charlie's staff and associates in Hebdo offices, and then five more innocents, stemmed all too predictably from the cruel stupidity of violent Islamists, who hated Charlie's cartoons.

Let's remember to think about murderers who have lived such pathetic lives, who had no understanding of or respect for freedom of speech.

In modern print media, a cartoon is a piece of art, usually humorous in intent. This usage dates from 1843 when Punch magazine applied the term to satirical drawings in its pages, particularly sketches by John Leech. To poke fun at aspects of your history, you have to have a history greater than the history you're poking fun at. Having a few wits in your noggin is requisite, too.
