The 'sublime heroism' of British workers
This is an amazing story about hundreds of thousands of skilled and semi-skilled British citizens in Lancashire in the 1860s who refused to mill slave cotton from the American South. They persisted in resisting slavery despite losing their jobs and their livelihoods.
They starved to defend the freedom of people on the other side of the Atlantic.
One essential key . . .they and supportive mill owners were energised by evangelical Christianity and a moral ideal.
Abraham Lincoln called their heroism sublime.
