It is not certain whether Equiano's description of the pestilential filth and misery of the Atlantic crossing is his own or composed from the recollections of enslaved Africans. His life as a slave and his adventures after he managed to gain his freedom are a powerful witness to the cruelty of slavery and to the spirit of a man.
Sometime in the 1760s, Ottabah Cugoano was taken as a child from Africa to Grenada to be a slave. Purchased by an English merchant, in 1772, he was taken to England, and set free. He adopted the name John Stuert, and became a well-known figure in London. In 1786, he alerted Granville Sharpe that a kidnapped black man, Henry Demane, was going to be sent back to the West Indies. Sharpe managed to have Demane freed. In 1787, with the help of Equiano, he published an account of his life as a slave, and sent it to the King. In his narrative, Cugoano called for abolition.
