On this winter’s solstice, I'm reminded of a song like a snowy dream – Procol Harum’s “Whiter Shade of Pale”. An English progressive rock band that formed in early 1967,
Procol Harum produced a unique sound that emphasized Brooker's melancholy vocals and an evocative mix of his eclectic piano, Fisher's elegant, church-like organ, Wilson's dramatic drumming and Trower's searing guitar licks, along with frequent black humour and a penchant for unpredictable experimentation. "A Whiter Shade of Pale" is one of the most popular songs ever recorded. According to the Guardian, a new copyright decision announced in high court assigns some of the song's copyright and royalties to Fisher, and leaves Brooker piqued.
