Brits do learn second languages on occasion
Late last month we noted that Education Secretary Alan Johnson deplored the British fixation with English and wished to encourage pupils to learn other languages, even “exotic” languages such as Urdu. We have little to say about this, aside from wishing that Classical Greek might be added to the Minister’s list.
Here, however, is proof positive that Brits can revel in speaking second and third languages when they have a particular interest in doing so. Courtesy the Anchoress, we give you British baritone Simon Keenlyside in a 1996 production of Cosi Fan Tutte and Bryn Terfel in 1997 in Don Giovanni. Their musicianship is effortlessly and rather dashingly on display.
