Against nepotism
Caroline Kennedy's attempt to have herself appointed Senator of New York has been criticized as nepotism since she appears to be relying on her family's name to clinch the deal. If so, she isn't alone. Politicians and movie stars precede her, and children often take over a family business. Of course, a legislative seat isn't supposed to be a family business, but some families may be sincerely public-spirited. The argument against nepotism is simple - persons do not advance based on merit but on connections.
