Please, don't go back to the 1970s
On my flight back to Portland, I sat next to a lovely woman with common sense who reminisced about tapping sugar maple trees at a friend's home, collecting buckets of sap and boiling it into a delectable maple syrup that she bartered for food. She likes to buy food locally at farmers' markets today, but she has no interest in returning to the 1970s, nor, judging by Janet Daley's comically grim account of life in 1970s Britain, would any of us.
As you are probably tired of hearing us say, a government cannot run an economy successfully because it does not have sufficient knowledge - it's missing the information provided by millions of people in a free economy. Daley makes an interesting point about the command economy of the Second World War.
